Product Update - Business Desktops and Notebooks Impact of Japan Earthquake
We are getting a clearer picture of the impact from the recent sad events in Japan. To date we know of 2 issues with components which will impact supply, these are;
1 - DVD-RW Drives
Our major Optical Drive supplier had been badly impacted and we expect serious constraints on these parts. We are working on alternative sources for these components. One impact of this is that, for the newly announced 2011 Product Lines we will change the specification of the DVD RW Drives to remove the HP LightScribe functionality. This feature enables users to etch labels on DVD Media. It is not a feature that many customer use so we expect the impact to be minimal.
2 - USB 3.0 on 2011 Platforms
The supply of connectors for USB 3.0 modules in the 2011 platforms has been impacted. As a consequence of this the specifications we will be offering USB 2.0 in most of our 2011 Notebook and Desktop ranges.
Documentation will be revised to reflect these changes. These features may be reinstated later in the life cycle once supply settles down.
